Can you imagine what your life would be like if you shook all day long? I’m not talkin’ booty shakin’; I mean full-on, all-over, uncontrollable shaking. Contemplate how you would carry out every-day, mundane tasks we take for granted. How would you brush your teeth? Could you type on your tiny smart phone screen? Would you be able to use a fork to feed yourself? Can you even fathom the thought of never being able to open a jar again without help?
I woke up this morning, washed my face, brushed my teeth, and then poured myself a cup of coffee. Instead of performing this usual routine mindlessly, I couldn’t help but think about my incredible granddad, Papas. Papas has Parkinson’s Disease. If you are unfamiliar with what this disease does to your body, it is a progressive disorder of the nervous system that affects your movement. It develops gradually; and also commonly causes stiffness and/or slowing of movement. (For further information on Parkinson’s Disease, click here.)
After spending Christmas with our sweet Papas Bob and Grammy (who is undoubtedly Superwoman), my hate for Parkinson’s and love of an active lifestyle has been remarkably reaffirmed.
While yes, uncontrollable tremors have become Papas’ worst enemy, his Denice-the-Menace demeanor and positive outlook on life haven’t waived a bit. Taking off down the mountain with his walker, and singeing his hair in the fire pit are frequent occurrences at the Nickel residence. Frequent, uncontrollable and unquestionably terrifying. There’s just no stopping Bob Nickel on a mission. 🙂
As a young girl, Papas encouraged my love of an active lifestyle. And by active lifestyle, I mean pulling over on the road just so I could get out and dance on a rock. He taught me frozen bananas are the best thing since sliced bread. He taught me you can never take too many trips to Baskin Robbins. And he taught me patience. Patience for myself, patience for others, and most importantly patience with family.
I hope you all are enjoying your families this holiday season. Be grateful for their health and never take their company for granted.
For December 23, I encourage you to try today’s challenge. At least one part. Don’t take this day for granted. You have a healthy body — use it, work it, love it!
