The FiCtionary | Part I

Today, my friends, I’m unleashing The FiCtionary. Think dictionary…with a little Fit is Chic twist. 😉

Throughout the next few weeks, I’ll be breaking down some serious fitness lingo. Because let’s be real, some of this stuff is confusing as shit.

So without further ado. . .

The FiCtionary | Fit is Chic

HIIT – [Pronounced: hit] Stands for high intensity interval training. Long story short, going hard for a few minutes, followed by going not-so-hard for a few minutes. Repeat.

Strength Training – Any type of physical exercise specializing in the use of resistance, causing muscular contraction, which builds strength, anaerobic endurance, and size of skeletal muscles. (Thank you, Web MD.)

Resistance Training – There seems to be a lot of confusion as of late regarding the difference between strength and resistance training. I’ll make it reeeeeal simple for you. There is NO difference. These terms are interchangeable.

Weight Training – (See previous two terms.) Just another way to say strength training. This term is also interchangeable with resistance training.

Free Weights – A weight used in weightlifting that is NOT connected to an apparatus. So basically, any weight not connected to some type of machine is a free weight.

Dumbbell – A short bar with a weight on each end. And for the record, dumbell is ONE word, people. Not two. Dumb bell is not a thing. Unless you have a bell suffering from dumbness, dumb bell does not exist.

Barbell – A long bar with weights attached to both ends. And just like dumbbell, barbell is one word. Keep in mind, there’s a few different versions — barbells used in Crossfit have much bigger plates on the ends.

Kettlebell – A cast-iron or cast-steel weight used to perform ballistic exercises. And by ballistic exercises, I mean exercises used to develop explosiveness and power.

And last, but DEFINITELY not least…

Fit is Chic – [Pronounced: fit is sheek] I love you all; and I even love you when you mispronounce my blog name. But I plan to do big things with this name, so it’s important to me you all know how to say it. No, it is not fit is chick. That does not even make sense. Fit is chick? What? NO. FIT IS CHIC. Sheeeeeeeek. Sheek. Chic. Fit is Chic.

Aaaaaand that concludes Part I of The FiCtionary.

Stay tuned for more!

Are there any terms you’d like to see in Part II? Leave a comment and let me know.

Stay fit (and informed), friends! Xo
