Soft & Sexy Valentine Hair

There was a time in my life when the only hairstyle I knew was blow-dried, straightened and fried. Every morning: wash, blow-dry, straighten. Repeat. Bless my heart… I was super-duper blond with fried, dead ends.

One badass hairdresser, and a few years later, my hair began to steal my thunder. It’s amazing what a little TLC, and laying off the highlights, will do for one’s mane. Now, my hair is one of the first things people notice about me: thick, long and healthy (and kinda nappy when I wake up…no one’s perfect).

After countless hours of YouTube videos, I eventually learned to curl my hair. I sat in front of my computer, for hours on end, trying to perfect the Victoria’s Secret waves. Sometimes I’d end up looking like Shirley Temple, and other times I’d look like a hungover drag queen. This is not an exaggeration. This is real life: confessions of a rookie woman.

Since it’s one month ’til Valentine’s Day (my favorite holiday), I figured it’s the perfect time to share my soft, sexy Valentine Hair with you. This gives you one month to refine your Valentine-date look.

These waves are an updated version of the tutorial I posted on Pinterest last year. Instead of simple, brushed-out waves, these are twisted, tousled waves – Mattie’s Twaves. 🙂

1. Start with freshly-washed hair – for optimum hold, spray your hair with flexible-hold hair spray before curling.

2. Take a small section of your hair, and twist it tightly at the top.

3. After twisting, wrap that section of hair around the curling iron – If your hair will not stay tightly twisted at the top once you start to wrap it, it’s ok…don’t panic.

4. Hold for about 30-45 seconds, and then let the curl gently fall off the iron.

5. Continue the previous steps…

6. For the last section of hair, twist it gently out of your face – do not twist it as tightly as the rest of your hair.

7. Wrap it around the iron, away from your face.

8. Hold for 30 seconds, and then let the curl gently fall off the iron.

9. Let your hair cool for about 3 minutes.

10. Now, run your fingers through your hair.

11. Tousle it up a little bit. These are twisted, tousled waves; have fun!

I know what it feels like to be a rookie in the hair department, so I hope this tutorial saves you time and stress.

Helpful Hints:
– Don’t use a brush on these waves, your fingers are the best for tousling.
– Don’t use too much hairspray. A light layer will do just fine (flexible hold).
– I used a 1-inch barrel curling iron — Hot Tools is my favorite.
– I removed the clamp from my curling iron to eliminate any creasing potential. (You can remove the clamp with a screwdriver.)

Don’t hesitate to ask if you have any questions. I’m more than happy to help you out – from one rookie to another. Xo

Love, Mattie Claire
