If someone were to ask you why you workout, what would you say? No hesitation, no thinking about your answer, just your honest reply. Why do you workout?
I can guarantee only 2 or 3 out of 10 people would reply by saying, “I workout for me.” There would be some “I want to look good in a bikini,” a few “I want my clothes to fit better,” and maybe one or two “I’m engaged and need to be skinny now,” or “I’m single and I want to be hot.”
If someone would have asked me that question 6 years ago, I would not have said “I workout for me.” It would have been more along the lines of, “I’m fat and I want to be skinny.” Because just like every other 19-year-old girl, I wanted to fit in.
I began going to the gym, because that’s what everyone else was doing. I tried running, because being seen outside was the new “in”. I did weight training, I did abs class, I did Pilates, I did Zumba. I did it all. But I wasn’t doing it for me, I was doing it to fit in. Just another blue-eyed blonde sorority girl in neon workout clothes. How original…
It took graduating, meeting Mr. Right, and a couple of not-so-ideal jobs to truly understand the significance of “I workout for me”. Little did I know, bosses do not give a damn about a new body pump class in town. And Mr. Right’s love is unconditional; even on my “fat” days.
Working out for me, and only me, has led to more open doors than I could have ever imagined. It has led me to this blog, which in turn has led me to the opportunity to help, motivate and inspire all of you.
So, why do you workout? Honestly, ask yourself. If it’s to look good in a bikini, who cares about what anyone else thinks! Your body is beautiful; and as long as you feel good about yourself, that is ALL that matters. If you workout to look good for your boyfriend, husband or anyone else…stop it. Use their love and support for motivation, but always remind yourself, “I workout for me.”
Forget what society says is “in”, let go of what everyone else thinks, and stop comparing yourself to others. This is your life, not theirs. So forget the rest and let ’em know, I workout for ME!
