5 Ways to Stay Energized

Y’all. This weather is glorious. I need a light sweater to go outside, and it’s JUNE. In West Texas! I see you, Mother Nature; doin’ your thang.

Thank you for making Monday a tad easier to tolerate…

Speaking of Monday, raise your hand if you have very little zero energy on Mondays?

raise your hand

You too? Well good news, I’ve got a few tips to help solve this little problem. Because unfortunately, Mondays aren’t the only days my energy levels plummet. It’s just an unfortunate side-effect of being such a badass all the time. You feel me?

Yes honey

So, we all know drinking caffeine and getting a good night’s sleep will give you energy. Duh. But did you know drinking coffee at the wrong time can actually decrease your energy? Shocking, right?…

Now that I have your attention, here’s 5 ways to stay energized:

1. Wait at least an hour, after waking up, before drinking a cup of coffee.
Any earlier, and you risk feeling jittery until lunch. Feeling jittery leads to over-eating; and over-eating at lunch leads to a big fat nap that you probably can’t take. So ditch the risk, and wait an hour.

2. Stop snoozing!
Pushing the snooze button ten times does your body absolutely no good, whatsoever. You are just making yourself more tired by waking up and falling back to sleep over and over. Instead, set your alarm for the exact time to have to get out of bed. This allows for a few extra minutes of (precious) deep sleep, and a lot more energy.

3. Chug, Chug, Chug…
Water. As soon as you roll out of bed, drink at least 16 oz. of water. Your body dehydrates overnight, so replenishing your fluid level will instantly make you feel less sleepy in the morning. This applies throughout your day too. Cure the 2 o’clock slump with a bottle of water. Most people mistake that stomach “rumble” for hunger; but if you ate a good lunch, there’s a pretty good chance your body is asking you for water, not more food.

4. An apple a day does more than keep the doctor away.
Not only are apples extremely rich in important antioxidants and dietary fiber, they also deliver a dietary flavonoid called quercetin. Quercetin aids in endurance by making oxygen more available to the lungs. So in other words, apples > coffee. For further info on the health benefits of apples, click here.

5. Get your heart pumping.
The minute you feel your energy crashing, drink some water, hop up, and get that blood flowing. Walk up and down the hall, around your office, up and down the stairs; wherever you are, 5 to 10 minutes of walking around will help keep your energy up. If possible, a short walk in the sunlight helps too. For a big burst of energy, try my favorite Tabata workout. No equipment needed, and it only takes 4 minutes!

Here’s to having more energy, friends! Have a fabulous week! Xo
